Punakha Dzong also known as the ‘Palace of Great Happiness,’ is considered Bhutan’s most beautiful dzong and one of its most important historical landmarks. Built in 1637 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, it served as Bhutan’s capital for over 300 years and remains the sacred site where Bhutan’s kings, beginning with Ugyen Wangchuck in 1907, are traditionally crowned. Located at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers, the dzong also serves as the winter residence of the Je Khenpo and central monastic body. It houses sacred relics, including the remains of the Zhabdrung.
