Gross National Happiness

Gross National Happiness is based on four main pillars that guide the country’s progress. These pillars are sustainable and equitable socio-economic development, environmental conservation, preservation and promotion of culture, and good governance. Together, these pillars ensure that development benefits all citizens while protecting Bhutan’s natural and cultural heritage for future generations.

The first pillar, sustainable and equitable socio-economic development, focuses on improving the living standards of all Bhutanese people. Economic growth is encouraged, but it must be inclusive and environmentally responsible. The government works to provide access to education, healthcare, employment, clean water, electricity, and infrastructure across the country. Development should reduce poverty and create opportunities without creating large gaps between the rich and the poor. By promoting balanced growth, Bhutan seeks to improve the quality of life for every citizen rather than simply increasing national income.
